| Dunlin (Calidris alpina) (1) - Reported August 2, 2024 15:36 by Susan Davis - Kaminda Lac Wetlands, Bonaire - Comments: "This identification of a Dunlin is primarily based upon the overall size of the bird, the color and shape of the bill, and the length of the wingtips. Observed field marks: Black legs; entirely black bill, slightly decurved with a thick (black) base and a droop at the tip; the wingtips extended nearly to the end of the tail, but they did not exceed the tail in length. The underwings were mostly white with some dark mottling along the leading edge and a narrow dark band along the trailing edge (see images). Since the shorebird was foraging in the company of a Least Sandpiper (see images), the overall size could be readily discerned to be bigger than a peep, a bit plump, with a hunched stance. Foraging: Probing using an up-and-down movement--sewing machine style (video available). Vocalizations: It vocalized once with a raspy “kree” call. Exclusions of similar species: Other species with long, black bills were considered, but excluded. Since the bird was larger than a peep, the Western Sandpiper was excluded as a possibility. Another similar species could be the White-rumped Sandpiper. However, in this species, the wingtips would extend beyond the tail, but in the bird under observation, the wingtips extended almost to the tail, but not beyond. Further, the bill was much longer than would be observed on a White-rumped Sandpiper, and the reddish area normally seen at the base of the bill was not in evidence. Other substantiating data: It would be unusual to see a Dunlin on Bonaire at any time of the year, given that they normally only travel as far south as the southern USA or Mexico. However, it's even more unusual to observe a Dunlin on Bonaire in early August, given that it is normally a late-fall migrant. However, according to Birds of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao (Wells, Childs Wells), J. Ligon reported a Dunlin in basic plumage on August 31, 2003. Two other sightings, also reporting basic plumage, were observed on June 4, 1985. A search of the eBird database indicates that there is one prior confirmed sighting on Bonaire on September 25, 2016, observed by the BirdsCaribbean team." ![]() |
